Abstract
This is a study of the definition, history, form and use of symbols, applicable to visual imagery and
art, and as such applicable to the field of photography. This text argues for a definition of symbols
into two categories: personal symbols (symbols which meaning is understood by one person) and
shared symbols (symbols which symbolic meaning is shared by two or more people). It contains a
historic overview of symbolic origin and usage as well as a study of symbolic consensus and the
probability into whether symbols need to be taught or whether they are inherited into the human
phycological and physiological makeup. The results on this is ambiguous as a clear test on inherited
symbolic consensus is implausible.
