- Postwar Japanese photography from document to memoryTryputen, Stanislav(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Filmová a televizní fakulta, 2012)Date of thesis defence: 2012-09-18Photography of Japan during the postwar period went through a radical transition from photo-realist approach which was focused on the study of national identity of the country to a more subjective approach of a new generation of photographers affected by the devastation of war. They have developed a new visual language and the themes of their photography were often highly personal in nature. The goal of this work is to analyze the influences on this change within the historical and social context of postwar Japan.
- Symbols in Visual ImageryRinggard Bak, Nina(Akademie múzických umění v Praze.Filmová a televizní fakulta, 2013)Date of thesis defence: 2013-09-09This is a study of the definition, history, form and use of symbols, applicable to visual imagery and art, and as such applicable to the field of photography. This text argues for a definition of symbols into two categories: personal symbols (symbols which meaning is understood by one person) and shared symbols (symbols which symbolic meaning is shared by two or more people). It contains a historic overview of symbolic origin and usage as well as a study of symbolic consensus and the probability into whether symbols need to be taught or whether they are inherited into the human phycological and physiological makeup. The results on this is ambiguous as a clear test on inherited symbolic consensus is implausible.
